  1. This was the origianl poem:

    lovers sit, whispering low
    beneath a willow
    listening to the river

    Don’t really like the dissonance of low and willow – hence the change above.

  2. What’s nice is the ambiguity as well as clarity of language ( perhaps a good definition of poetry). Perhaps in another language it is not so, but in English the lack of punctuation here means subject and object are flexible. For example, who listens? The lovers? The willow tree? The writer? The sound of a willow’s leaves are like whispers, so, are the lovers really there or does the poet conjure similarities….. And so on, layers on layers, something to savour….
